2007-2008
NAELS STUDENT GOVERNING BOARD
REGION 3 REPRESENTATIVE
Diana Krevor became interested
in environmental advocacy as an undergraduate at NYU. Through
coursework in environmental economics and urban planning and design, she
studied the growth patterns of cities and their surrounding areas. She
wrote her undergraduate honors thesis on urban sprawl and smart growth
initiatives. She recently discovered life beyond large northeastern cities
after hiking in the Pacific Northwest and Israel. Diana is excited to
work with so many inspiring and passionate law students from around the
country.
REGION 4 REPRESENTATIVE
Bruce Scott is a student at Wake Forest University and expects (hopes) to graduate in 2009. He grew up hiking the southern Appalachians around Boone, NC and then explored the Cumberland Plateau while an undergraduate at the University of the South in Sewanee, TN. After college he joined the Coast Guard and (among other things) enforced environmental laws in Alaska and New England. Bruce is a member of the Carolina Mountain Club and the Sierra Club and is in the middle of starting the Environmental Law Society at Wake Forest University.
REGION 5 REPRESENTATIVE
Elise
Peterson Elise Peterson is a student at WIlliam Mitchell College of Law. She will graduate in 2009. She has studied environmental problems over the course of her life. Her mother was an local environmental activist. She majored in Sociology, Women's Studies, The Critical Studies of Race and Ethnicity, and Philosophy at the College of St. Catherine. Through there majors she learned how the decisions of humans affect other humans and their environments. She is committed to making the world a better place for all humans and other species. Environmental Law is a good place for her to put her energy, as it is the intersection of many of her interests.
REGION 6 REPRESENTATIVE
Joshua Bailey Josh grew up on the border of nature and development, watching the native hardwoods of Mississippi being sheared from the hills and replaced homogeneous pine. He entered law school solely for the opportunity to protect the diminishing wilderness of our fathers' stories. He hopes to graduate from the U of A in the spring of '09 and pursue a career legal career that may eventually open the door to a political position.
REGION 7 REPRESENTATIVE
Patrick Aitchison Patrick Aitchison has always had a love for nature. Studying biology and chemistry at Butler University, he gained a deep appreciation for the natural environment. An avid backpacker, Patrick finally decided to put his passion into practice and headed to law school at Saint Louis University to make a difference--intending to make his avocation his occupation. He interns at Great Rivers Environmental Law Center, is co-president of Environmental Law Society and is active in the local Sierra Club.
REGION 10 REPRESENTATIVE
Amanda
Freeman Amanda has advocated for the environment since before her Earth-Day-themed 10th birthday party and initial backpacking trips in the South San Juans. At the University of Oregon School of Law, Amanda codirected the 25th Public Interest Environmental Law Conference (PIELC) in 2007. This year she is Land Air Water's (UO's environmental law society) Research Network cochair. Amanda worked at Earthjustice in Seattle last summer, and is currently a clinic student with the Western Environmental Law Center. Prior to law school, Amanda developed her environmental tools while earning her Environmental Sciences and International Studies degrees from Northwestern University, completing two AmeriCorps terms implementing salmon restoration efforts in northern California, and leading watershed restoration efforts as Program Director for the Mattole Restoration Council in Humboldt County, CA. Amanda loves hiking with her dog, biking, disc golf, gardening, knitting, leafy greens, red wine, and travel.
Mary
Reichert Mary Reichert attends Tulane Law School and will be graduating in 2008 with an Environmental Law Certificate. She earned her BFA magna cum laude from Denison University in Theatre with a minor in Environmental Studies. After spending several years living and pursuing her acting career in Los Angeles , she deciding that she would rather be hugging a tree than performing on the big screen. Reviving her passion for protecting the environment, she headed off to law school. At Tulane, she is President of the Environmental Law Society, a member of the Tulane Law Review, and on the Moot Court Trial Team. Originally from Cleveland , OH , she would like to second Jonathans spirit for the Cleveland Indians (Go Tribe!). When shes not eagerly reading her casebooks, Mary enjoys photography, baking, exploring, and watching Lost.
Thomas Carbonell Thomas was raised in Raleigh, NC and attended North Carolina State University, where he graduated in winter 2002 with bachelor's degrees in chemical engineering, economics, and multidisciplinary studies. After a spring of volunteering and traveling in Latin America, Thomas attended Oxford University on a Marshall Scholarship where he pursued master's degrees in development economics and environmental management. Currently a second-year J.D. candidate at Yale Law, Thomas expect to graduate in spring 2008. He has been interested in environmental issues most of his life, and in environmental law and policy since junior year of college; has been fortunate to indulge these interests through summer internships at the Center for International Environmental Law, Environmental Defense, World Resources Institute, DOJ-Environmental Enforcement Div., and the New York Attorney General's Environmental Protection Bureau.
John Costenbader John Costenbader
is finishing his second year at The George Washington University Law School.
While at GW, he has enjoyed interning with the Environment and Natural
Resources Division of the Department of Justice and the Overseas Private
Investment Corporation. John holds a Master of Public Affairs from Indiana
University's School of Public and Environmental Affairs, where he concentrated
in Environmental
Jonathan DeCarlo Jonathan DeCarlo is a first year law student
at Vermont Law School in South Royalton, VT. Jon is originally from Youngstown,
OH, but has lived in Lewiston, Maine for the last four years as he attended
and graduated from Bates College with a degree in philosophy. He realized
in college that he had a deep interest in environmental ethics which was
a key factor in choosing to pursue a career in environmental law. As for
summer jobs, he has held positions waiting tables at a country club, organic
farming, and directing canvasses. He currently spends his time in the
library, participating in on-campus events such as ELS and the VLS Mountaineers,
and playing guitar. He would also like to mention that he loves the Cleveland
Indians, cooking, and playing ultimate Frisbee for the VLS team.
Katie Lannon Katie will be entering
her second year at GW Law School in DC. After growing up in Maryland,
she attended Davidson College in North Carolina where she earned a B.S.
in Biology. Katie has worked as a raft guide for the Nantahala Outdoor
Center, an SCA intern for the Nature Conservancy, and program director
for Adventure Treks, among other things. She also thru-hiked the Appalachian
Trail from Georgia to Maine and bicycled cross-country from Washington
to Maine before deciding to attend law school. Katie is particularly interested
in land, water, and energy use and is excited to become more involved
with NAELS.
Gwen Matuszek Gwen's first love is the ocean and upon graduating from Hamilton College in 2001 she began working on tall-ships. Before enrolling at Roger Williams this past fall, she spent her time teaching students nautical science and seamanship on sail training vessels operating in the Atlantic, Pacific, and Caribbean. She will graduate from Roger WIlliams in 2009 and hopes to combine my JD with a Masters in Marine Affairs from the University of Rhode Island.
Maureen McCrann Maureen is currently at Roger
Williams Law School in Bristol, RI and expect to graduate in 2009.
Born and raised in Maine, She has always been intrigued by the ocean in
all its capacities and has spent a lot of time working and playing on
the water.She is planning to get her Masters of Marine Affairs to use
with her law degree and is excited about working to better serve and protect
both the marine and greater environment.
Katie Moll Katie continues to incorporate values of environmentalism with sustainable development and the dynamic nature of human social systems. She obtained a BS in Biology and Environmental Studies from Alma College, in Alma, Michigan, gaining extensive field research experience as well as working with community groups on Brownfield remediation projects and Superfund Sites. Following graduation, she served in the US Peace Corps, working with an indigenous community based organization co-managing a rainforest protected area for conservation as well as ecotourism purposes in Belize, Central America. Katie (2009) is currently completing her first year at Vermont Law School, where she is pursing a joint JD and Masters in Environmental Law.
Dan O'Connor Dan is a second year
at Vermont School where my focus is environmental law.
He is active in several student groups on campus inlcuding the ELS, Campus
Greening Committee and Law Students for Choice. After he graduates in
2008, Dan hopes to do policy work for the government or a non-profit.
April Quinn Aprils love
for the environment stems from growing up on the California coast and
frequent camping trips to Yosemite National Park. She received
a business degree from Cal State University, Long Beach in 2003. For a
year and a half after college she attempted and failed to get a business
of her own off the ground. Through her education and work experience April
learned that corporations dont always take their impact on the environment
seriously. She is determined to help solve this problem. April is currently
at the University of Baltimore Law School, and will graduate in the spring
of 2009. She is a member of University of Baltimores Environmental
Law Society and Womens Bar Association.
Nancy Rachlis Nancy is originally
from Northern Virgina and did her undergraduate work at Penn State
where she got a degree in Environmental Resource
Management and Environmental Economics. Since that time she
has become an avid college football fan. She is currently enrolled in
the joint degree program at Indiana and is working towards a Masters in
Environmental Science. She will graduate in 2010. Nancy has worked as
a naturalist, tour guide, and a wetland technician.
