BIO: I am a second-year law student at Lewis and Clark Law School in Portland, Oregon, and I am currently serving as the Law Clerk for the Northwest Environmental Defense Center (NEDC). I grew up on rivers swimming, canoeing and kayaking from a very young age, eventually allowing my love for the outdoors lead me from mountain to coast to stream. In the spring of 2002 I put my public interest goals on hold to start Summit Whitewater Expeditions, a small kayaking company based in North Carolina. For three years I spent my time planning and leading river trips for teenagers loving every moment of it but feeling like I was on the sidelines of an even bigger life project. Eventually I made the commitment to attend law school, and for me Lewis and Clark was the perfect choice. My role as the NEDC law clerk has especially prepared me to serve as a Co-Chair for NAELS. In many respects, the NEDC law clerk serves as the public face of the Lewis and Clark student environmental community demonstrating enthusiasm and welcoming new students to the program is an important task. NAELS: NAELS provides an important network for students across the country to connect with and learn from one another. NAELS can remain vital to students by providing meaningful ways to participate in the national environmental community, and by encouraging the free exchange of programmatic ideas between individual student groups. I believe that the cohesion and support provided by NAELS can further our collective efforts to increase the effectiveness of environmental legal education nationwide, and I look forward to becoming a committed member of the NAELS leadership. CAMPUS CLIMATE NEUTRAL: In time, Campus Climate Neutral will prove to be an important tool with which our university campuses, and the communities they support, can move towards sustainability. We are at a crossroads, with global warming finally emerging on the national conscience, and NAELS is poised to act in a way that engages graduate and law students around the country in a collaborative seach for a solution. Boehr BIO: I was born a raised on a farm in Nebraska. My mother was an environmentalist and my father a farmer albeit a conscientious one, but needless to say, we had many interesting dinner table conversations. I attended the University of Nebraska - Lincoln and majored in Biochemistry. After working for the Nebraska Farm Bureau and doing a cooperative study on the Platte River I decided to pack up move to Indiana to go to law school. I hope I can use my science skills and ag background to improve communication between scientists, agriculture, and environmental communities NAELS: I like NAELS because its easy to forget about environmental issues that aren't in your area but should still be taken into consideration when thinking about policy. CAMPUS CLIMATE NEUTRAL: We planted trees for a carbon sequestration site relating to CCN and had five ELS students show up. Denise Walker has been extremely instrumental in CCN and has been diligently working as a joint degree student. Jamie

NAELS & CAMPUS CLIMATE NEUTRAL: As a NAELS governing board member, Devorah has initiated efforts toward a climate neutral campus through collaboration among campus administrators, faculty, and various Vermont Law School student groups, including the Environmental Law Society and Campus Greening Committee. Devorah believes that NAELS is an effective and essential resource in bringing graduate schools together to share ideas for attaining climate neutrality. It provides a forum for dynamic discourse about timely environmental issues, such as energy efficiency and climate change, and for planning effective and strategic campus based campaigns that positively impact communities beyond the law school campus. In addition, NAELS provides a network of research and career opportunities for students and faculty. Jamie

Calvano BIO: I'm currently a first year JD/MSEL (Masters of Studies in Environmental Law) student at Vermont Law School-class of 2008. I graduated from Penn State University in 2001 with a B.S. in Earth Sciences. I worked for Bucks Geophysical in Doylestown, PA after graduating, and then moved out to Boulder, CO to pursue law school and ended up in Vermont. NAELS:
"The Association" provides an important and efficient
link to environmentally minded law students by facilitating the sharing of ideas
and actions that can be utilized for effective campaigns and actions like Campus
Climate Neutral. CAMPUS
CLIMATE NEUTRAL: I'm interested in understanding
how energy and water use policy, laws Jamie

Pavelka BIO:
Hi, I'm Michelle Pavelka, a 1L at the University of Nebraska College of Law. I
grew up on a diversified crop and livestock farm in south-central Nebraska, where
I operated my own farm-fresh turkey business. I attended the University of Nebraska
- Lincoln, where I received my degree in animal science with minors in math and
diversified agriculture. My favorite undergrad experiences included participating
in an English Conversation Partners program, studying abroad in Western Europe,
serving as a Bible Study leader, and NAELS: I hope that my involvement with NAELS with give me an opporunity to help grow and strengthen our local group and incorporate new ideas and initiatives in ELS. CAMPUS CLIMATE NEUTRAL: Coming Soon! Jamie

Lynch BIO: Hello, my name is Kevin Lynch and I am a second year law student at NYU. I have a deep interest in environmental law and plan to pursue a career in government and public interest environmental work. I was a Biology major in college and I trace my interest in environmental issues to that time. I even spent a summer during college doing research on coral reefs off the coast of Borneo. I spent three years working as a technology consultant in the energy industry before returning to school to get my law degree at NYU. I have taken courses on Environmental Law, Natural Resources Law, Public Interest Environmental Law, and a clinic with the NRDC. I spent my 1L summer working at Environmental Defense in Washington DC and doing research for a professor at NYU on the changes to New Source Review proposed by EPA in recent years. This summer I will be working for the Department of Justice in DC and the New York Attorney General doing environmental enforcement work. I have also recently been chosen to be the Editor in Chief of the NYU Environmental Law Journal. For the past year I have coordinated the distribution of a newsletter containing environmental events in the New York City area to other student groups and community members.
NAELS:
As you can see, I have a very deep interest in environmental law
and policy. I am interested in getting involved with NAELS to share my experience
at NYU and learn from other students around the country. CAMPUS CLIMATE NEUTRAL: Coming Soon! Jamie

Dargin BIO: My name is Justin Dargin and I am a student at the University of Toledo College of Law. Although I am transferring to a school with a greater specialty in my chosen field, I am expected to graduate in December 2007. Articles about my involvement in environmental and social issues. NAELS: Because I have established a reputation as a student leader, I have been the point-person in gaining faculty support and assembling social issues conferences at my university. I intend to start a NAELS Sustainable Endowment Initiative with like-minded persons in the school and the surrounding community. CAMPUS
CLIMATE NEUTRAL: I have promoted clean
energy at the university, and at the state and national levels. I used the 2004
Presidential campaign as a focus to establish a clean energy signature drive that
obtained over 300 signatures of concerned citizens, that I personally presented
to the chief aides of Ohio Governor Bob Taft. Jamie

Peterson BIO: I am a second year student at Vermont Law School pursuing joint JD and Masters of Environmental Law degrees. I received a B.A. in Environmental Studies and a B.A. in Anthropology from Eckerd College in Florida. After college, I traveled for several years throughout the U.S. and Canada. The beautiful places I explored and my interactions with many amazing people while I was on the road convinced me that each of us has the power and responsibility to positively impact our environment. I decided to go to law school to utilize my skills and vision to promote positive changes in the way human beings live in this beautiful and interconnected world we depend upon. NAELS BLURB: I am really excited to be working with NAELS this coming year. One of the reasons that NAELS is such a great organization is that it facilitates communication between law students on a variety of environmental issues. NAELS provides a forum for law students to share how they have addressed environmental issues in their area, providing guidance to other students on what works and what doesnt. CAMPUS
CLIMATE NEUTRAL: Vermont
Law Schools annual Solutions Conference, held in March 2006, was a climate
neutral event! Jamie

Melton BIO: From Boulder, Colorado, I studied a bizarre mixture of geology, environmental studies, and political science in undergrad. After graduation, I worked in a petroleum systems lab with somewhat innocuous geologists as they prepared to buy in to the Gulf oil industry and then slaved away in the environmental department of an oil & gas firm in Denver focused on coalbed methane in Montana and Wyoming. This summer I am headed to New Mexico to work in Native American Lawlegal aid and the Tribal Courts. I hope to put my trial-by-wellhead-flare-fires to work for the benefit of smart energy and the land/mineral/water rights of indigenous people. NAELS: I like NAELS because we need reminders! Were pretty content in Portland, Oregon and forget how tough a time environmental law groups at other law schools might have in getting access to the resources necessary to flourish. CAMPUS CLIMATE NEUTRAL: Personally, I car pool to school and supported a price hike in day-pass parking permits. Not much but every little bit helps! And Ill be biking home right after class to unplug my cell phone charger. Jamie

Battista BIO: I grew up in Maine and spent a lot of time in the woods and on ponds. Walking in the woods with my grandfather taught me a lot about how important it is to protect the environment. As much as I love the woods, I love the coast even more, especially estuaries and islands. I started sea kayaking about 10 years ago and since then have spent a lot of time on the water. I went to Colby College in Waterville, Maine and studied Philosophy and Science Technology and Society. After taking a year off to work at a mapping company and in a boat yard I am at Roger Williams University in a joint degree program for a JD and a Masters of Marine Affairs(from University of Rhode Island). NAELS: Good times, good people, good fun, if you're not part of it you're missing out. CAMPUS CLIMATE NEUTRAL: Recent news from the "frozen" north indicating that polar bears are struggling to survive because of a lack of ice underscore the importance of CCN work. Global warming is more than a theoretical worry, it is here, it is something the current generation of law students will have to deal with. CCN provides an excellent vehicle for affecting this change. At RWU, we trying to make the school's fall marine symposium climate neutral.
Liv
Fetterman BIO: I am a rising third year law student at Roger Williams University School of Law in Bristol, RI. Like any environmentally concerned person, I spent much of my childhood outdoors, hiking and digging around in the dirt. I then began my environmental education as an archaeologist. After several years of witnessing many natural and cultural resource atrocities, I chose to pursue a degree in law. I started my legal experience with an amazing summer internship for the Honorable Judge Baylson at the U.S. District Court for Eastern District of Pennsylvania. Feeling as though I was missing out much needed environmental education, I have since been interning for the Conservation Law Foundation (CLF) in Providence, RI, the oldest regional environmental advocacy organization in the country. Originally working under the tutelage of Christopher DOvidio, a NAELS alumnus, I am now working for Cynthia Giles in an effort to heighten regulations on polluted stormwater and ensure better compliance with federal laws governing stormwater discharges into the Blackstone River.
NAELS: NAELS has opened my eyes to national environmental issues that one usually loses in the scope of every-day, local efforts to attain environmental sustainability. The last NAELS conference impressed upon me the importance of a united, motivated network of law students working together to share stories, techniques, and campaigns.
CAMPUS CLIMATE NEUTRAL:
NAELS has also taught me quite a bit about global warming. In addition to
working with ELS students to bring Campus Climate Neutral to RWU, I am also now
able to strive to assist in CLFs current climate work, continuing to build
on the organizations long history of energy advocacy. Jamie
