Conference Background & History Wash U, St.
Louis - 2002
NAELS' 2002 conference, Sustainable Agriculture: Food for the Future, was hosted by Washington University School of Law in St. Louis from March 15 to 17, 2002. The Conference focused on ways in which the United States and the international community can continue to feed a growing population while sustaining productive ecosystems and a healthy environment. Among the topics discussed at the conference were non-point source pollution, biotechnology, and concentrated animal feeding operations. Dr. Peter Raven was the keynote speaker. Dr. Raven was named by President Clinton to receive the National Medal of Science, the nation’s highest scientific honor. He is also the president of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Dr. Raven has become a leader in international efforts to preserve biodiversity and has done research in Japan, China, Argentina, India, and several other countries. The conference also featured national scholars, government regulators, and activists in the sustainable agriculture sector.
