MODERN INDUSTRIAL REVOLUTION

Dan Worth, NAELS Executive Director [email]

Over the past 200 years, energy use in the United States has skyrocketed. This expanded energy use has brought with it amazing advances - doubled average life spans, goods and services to support a population of 300 million people, and increased mobility and quality of life for many. This expanded energy use has also led to many negative externalities - industrial pollution, waste, the rapid disappearance of countless species and acres of productive land, and the impending threat of climate change. Recently, many world scientists and leaders are calling for the global population to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by 80% by 2050 to avoid the worst consequences of climate change.

Tomorrow's leaders - many of whom are in today's graduate programs - will do the lions share of the work to change consumption patterns and lifestyles, rebuild the world's energy infrastructure, and provide goods and services to the global population. These students can spend their time in school conducting real-world consulting for schools, cities, and corporations to support current initiatives and launch new ones.
