H2O: Valuing, Preserving, and Conserving US Water Systems
NAELS Water Initiative
Patience Bosley-Burke [email]
2008-2009 NAELS Co-Chair

Water law - a broad expanse of law that includes everything from storm and wastewater management, to CAFOs, to Clean Water Act enforcement, to water scarcity, to hydropower and tidal power - will have an enormous impact on the environmental safety and security of the United States in the coming century. In all of these areas, the creation, interpretation, implementation, and enforcement of laws and policies at all levels will shape the legal landscape as the US population grows to an estimated 420 million people - much of this growth anticipated for the water-scarce Sunbelt region.

NAELS will work to identify several broad water law regions, current legal hot topics and issues, and leading model laws and policies. Students will then analyze how judicial decision-making and designing and enforcing effective laws can lead to desired outcomes. NAELS will work to disseminate best-practices and engage networks of law students/young atty's in the emerging water law areas where they are most needed.
