Addressing greenhouse gas emissions related to the transportation sector is one of the most difficult problems facing people looking for climate change solutions. Because of the highly local and state nature of land use development, federal action won't be enough if it is not matched at the state and local level with aggressive efforts towards creating a clean transportation picture. There are frequently legal issues related to making changes and finding green solutions to the local transportation picture: subsidies require adjustments to the local tax code, and zoning changes require appearing before the local land use planning board, for example. Because of the legal nature of many of these solutions, students in environmental law societies can play leadership role in effecting change.
